November 2008
Camping and Orienteering Weekend

Dates

November 1-2, 2008
Destination French Creek State Park, PA
Activities
UAH Hole 13
Orienteering and Frisbee Golf are the primary activities.  Plus get to meet the Pack 166 Webelos II scouts and their parents who are invited to participate.
bullet On Saturday everyone will get a chance to try out the permanent orienteering course around Hopewell lake. Map reading skills are a must but you may not need your compass for this warm-up course.
bullet Saturday's 18 hole Disc golf tournament will also be fun for all.
bullet On Sunday you get to compete in the Delaware Valley Orienteering Association's French Creek East event.  There will be seven different courses with varying lengths and levels of difficulty.  The easiest (white) course requires minimal compass skills and it will meet the first class orienteering requirement.  Other courses offer more of a challenge for older scouts and adults.  Webelos will compete on the white course with their parent.  They may also go in larger groups.
Orienteering
Orienteering 12-07 001 by lacda97.

Orienteering is a sport involving a map and a compass.  The map is a very detailed map of a section of woods or parkland. Streams, trails, hills, depressions, rocks, etc. are all mapped in great detail and very accurately located. There are several control points marked on the map.  The goal of orienteering is to complete a course in point-to-point order. You choose the route.  You might follow a road, or you may go cross country.  Starts are staggered and the person successfully completing the course in the least amount of time is the winner.  The fastest runner will often not be the winner.  Someone who can use their map and compass skills to choose the best route and quickly find the control points has a big advantage in this sport.
Accommodations Tent camping in troop Assault tents.  We will stay at group site 10.  A latrine is at the site and water is nearby.
